EU AI Act compliance for chatbots
A general customer-support or sales chatbot is usually limited risk. The key duty is Article 50(1): people must be told they are interacting with an AI system unless it's obvious. This applies from 2 August 2026.
If your chatbot is used for an Annex III purpose (screening job applicants, deciding credit eligibility, triaging emergency calls), it may be high-risk. If it generates text, images or audio, Article 50(2) marking also applies to the provider.
Checklist
- Show an "AI assistant" disclosure before or at the first message.
- Give people a route to a human.
- Mark generated media in a machine-readable way.
- Record the assessment in your AI inventory.
- Check GDPR for any chat logs.
